Where It Started
Shumaker Vineyards started as a dream Doug carried for a long time.
He grew up near Banks, Oregon, in a family where farming and land stewardship were simply part of life. Even while building a career in medicine, he never quite lost the pull of the land.
In 2001, Doug bought five acres near North Plains, in the northwest corner of the Willamette Valley, with an idea he wasn’t ready to let go of.
One day, there would be a vineyard here.
It took 13 years, but in 2014, he finally planted the vines.
From Vineyard to Wine
With the help of vineyard manager Valentin Mora and his crew, those five acres became Shumaker Vineyard in the Tualatin Hills AVA.
For the first few years, the fruit went to other winemakers. But eventually, growing the grapes wasn’t enough. Doug wanted to see what the land could become in the bottle too.
The first Shumaker Vineyards wines were released in 2021, made from fruit grown just steps from the place guests now come to sit, taste, and spend an afternoon.
A few years later, Doug retired from medicine and gave the vineyard the time and attention it had been asking for all along.
It Became Their Story

And then Leslie arrived.
What had been Doug’s dream, slowly became something the two of them could imagine together.
They married in May 2026, and somewhere along the way, Shumaker became much more than a vineyard or a wine business.
It became their home, opened up to other people.
Today, Doug and Leslie welcome guests to their North Plains tasting room every weekend. People walk through the backyard, sit beside the vines, taste wines grown on the land around them, and often stay much longer than they meant to.
It doesn’t feel much like a conventional winery.
That’s entirely the point.
The People Around the Wine
Shumaker has never been something Doug and Leslie built alone.
Valentin has been part of the vineyard since the beginning, helping establish and care for the vines year after year. Over time, that working relationship became something much closer to family.
Current winemaking collaborators Bree Stock MW and Chad Stock are part of that same story. They work closely with Doug and Leslie as the wines continue to evolve, bringing their own experience and curiosity to fruit grown here in the Tualatin Hills.
The bottles may carry the Shumaker name, but there are a lot of people in every one of them.
